Wedding photography on Cap Ferrat and Villefranche, French Riviera

story

the

Cap Ferrat is a peninsula of less than four square kilometres between Nice and Monaco. It contains more architectural excellence per hectare than almost anywhere on the French coast. Belle Époque villas surrounded by umbrella pines. Private estates with sea terraces on three sides, the extraordinary Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild at its highest point. For wedding photography, it is one of the great addresses on the Riviera.

The Bay of Villefranche

Furthermore, the Bay of Villefranche is the deep natural harbour immediately to the west of Cap Ferrat. Its depth makes it a port for large vessels, and its beauty. An enclosed blue arc of water surrounded by hillsides of ochre and rose buildings. Has been painted, photographed, and celebrated for centuries. The old town of Villefranche-sur-Mer sits at the water’s edge with a medieval Citadelle, narrow Baroque streets. And a chapel decorated by Jean Cocteau.

Furthermore, from Cap Ferrat’s eastern shore, the Bay of Villefranche appears across the narrow channel. A view that combines sea, hillside. Architecture in perfect proportion. Evening light arrives from the southwest and illuminates this view fully. It is one of the finest natural wedding photography backdrops on the entire coast.

Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild

Additionally, built between 1905 and 1912 by Beatrice de Rothschild, the Villa Ephrussi stands on the highest point of Cap Ferrat with panoramic views over both the Bay of Villefranche and the Bay of Beaulieu. The villa is in Venetian-Florentine style, the gardens divided into nine themed sections. French, Spanish, Florentine, Japanese, exotic, lapidary, rose, Provençal, and Sèvres. The estate can accommodate private events of significant scale.

Additionally, the gardens photograph extraordinarily well at the transitional hours. The fountain terrace faces southwest and catches afternoon sun from 15h onward. The rose garden has its own internal logic of light. Shaded in the morning, fully lit in the afternoon, with blooms that hold colour even in contrasty conditions. The view from the belvedere over the Bay of Villefranche is a wedding photograph in itself.

Getting to Cap Ferrat

However, nice Côte d’Azur airport is 20 minutes by road. The motorway exit for Villefranche or Beaulieu gives access to the peninsula within minutes. Monaco is 20 minutes further east. The geography makes Cap Ferrat genuinely central to the eastern Riviera. An ideal base for guests arriving from different directions.

Cap Ferrat: What the Peninsula Offers

Cap Ferrat is a peninsula of exceptional concentration. The Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild on its northern coast, the Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat on its southern point, the Villa Les Cèdres and its extraordinary botanical garden in the interior — more significant properties are contained in these four square kilometres than in most coastal towns ten times its size.

For photography, the specific advantage of Cap Ferrat is the double exposure to water. The peninsula faces both the bay of Villefranche to the east and the bay of Beaulieu to the west. In the late afternoon and early evening, this double-water orientation creates a quality of reflected light that is unique to the cap — light arriving from multiple directions simultaneously, filling in shadows and creating an even, warm illumination that is extraordinarily flattering for portraiture.

Villefranche-sur-Mer: The Working Port

Across the bay from Cap Ferrat, Villefranche is one of the most beautiful and least touristically saturated towns on the entire Riviera. The Vieille Ville — the old town built directly above the deepwater port — is a dense arrangement of coloured facades, vaulted passages, and steep streets that descend to the quay. The light in the narrow streets of Villefranche in the morning is extraordinary.

For a couple’s session that combines the scale of the Cap Ferrat properties with the intimacy of an old town, the combination of a Grand-Hôtel ceremony and a Villefranche evening session is one I’ve found to be among the most varied and rewarding days I photograph on the Riviera. Two completely different registers within twenty minutes of each other.

If you’re planning a wedding on Cap Ferrat or in Villefranche, I’d be glad to discuss what the photography would look like.
